CAMPBELL’S CREEK, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A young man faces charges after an accident involving a stolen moving truck on Wednesday.
The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at around 5:30am, a crash involving a moving truck in the 500 block of Campbell’s Drive in Kanawha County was under investigation by Deputy T.A. Casto and Corporal J.W. Eary.
Upon their arrival at the scene, deputies learned that the moving truck involved in the accident was a large 2021 Freightliner box truck which had become entangled with utility lines after striking residential fences.
The driver had apparently fled from the scene prior to the arrival of the deputies but was last seen running north. The investigating deputies learned that moments before the crash, the box truck had stopped at a Speedway convenience store. It was at this location that the deputies were able to get a description of the driver, later identified as Dustin L. Estep, 19-years-old of Winifrede, Kanawha County.
Deputies remained in the area and shortly after, Estep returned to the Speedway location where he was identified and detained by deputies. Over the course of the investigation, Deputy Casto learned that the box truck involved had been stolen from Country Inn and Suites in Kanawha City.
Dustin Estep was arrested for one felony count of Grand Larceny and was arraigned by a Kanawha County Magistrate. Estep is currently being held at South Central Regional Jail on a $25,000 cash bond.
The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office reports no injuries as a result of the crash, though the stolen truck suffered approximately $150,000 in estimated damages. The utility lines impacted were believed to be service lines for phone and cable. Service providers were reportedly notified of the incident, though it remains unclear whether services throughout the area were disrupted as a result of the crash.
