The tax exemption applies to the following items, provided each meets the individual price limit:
- Clothing priced at $125 or less
- School supplies priced at $50 or less
- School instructional materials priced at $20 or less
- Sports equipment priced at $150 or less
- Laptops and tablets priced at $500 or less
There is no limit on the total purchase amount, but only individual items under the price thresholds qualify.
Items bought for business or commercial use are not exempt.
Qualifying clothing includes everyday apparel such as shoes, shirts, pants, jackets, and uniforms.
Items like handbags, watches, protective gear, and sports cleats are not exempt. Similarly, only specific school supplies and instructional materials, such as notebooks, calculators, and textbooks, qualify.
Retailers must participate in the holiday, and the exemption also applies to online, phone, and mail orders placed during the tax holiday timeframe, provided the items are shipped immediately.
The holiday applies to both state and local sales taxes. For more information, visit the West Virginia State Tax Division’s website.
