GREENBRIER COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Emergency crews responded early Tuesday morning to a tractor-trailer crash that resulted in a significant diesel fuel spill along Interstate 64 in Greenbrier County.
According to Greenbrier County Sheriff Bart Baker, deputies were dispatched at approximately 6:00 a.m. on May 5, 2026, to mile marker 174 on the westbound side of the interstate.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered that a trailer transporting containers of diesel fuel had detached from the truck and slid into the median.
Officials said approximately 18 containers either ruptured or overturned, spilling an estimated 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Lewisburg Fire Department, White Sulphur Springs Volunteer Fire Department, and Fairlea EMS.
Additional support was requested from the West Virginia Department of Highways, West Virginia Department of Transportation, Greenbrier County Department of Homeland Security, and Evergreen Environmental Services to assist with containment efforts.
Despite a rapid response, officials confirmed that some of the spilled diesel entered nearby storm drains and reached Howard’s Creek.
Crews are working to contain the contamination and prevent it from spreading to the Greenbrier River.
Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area while cleanup and containment operations continue. No additional information on injuries or road closures was immediately available.
