RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Energy Express, a celebrated summer reading and nutrition program, is inviting Ridgeview community members to a special Open House event on Wednesday, July 23, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Ridgeview Elementary School.
The event is free and open to the public, with refreshments provided.
The open house will spotlight the hard work and creativity of the 32 local children participating in the Ridgeview Energy Express program, as well as their AmeriCorps mentors and volunteers. Attendees will enjoy displays of the children’s artwork and writing, while learning more about how the program supports learning and well-being during the summer months.
“Our children, mentors and volunteers work hard throughout these summer months, but they also have fun and take pride in what they do,” said Brittany Lucas, Community Coordinator for the Ridgeview site. “They look forward to sharing their art and writing with their community leaders, neighbors, friends and family.”
Energy Express combats the “summer slide,” a term used to describe academic setbacks that can occur when children do not continue building their reading skills over summer break. The program also provides nutritious meals and hands-on learning activities designed to keep kids engaged and supported.
Running this year from June 16 to July 25, the Ridgeview Energy Express site is one of 48 locations statewide, helping more than 2,000 children entering grades 1–6.
Local support plays a key role in the program’s success. Partners include Indoor Air, Sophia Food Lion, Affinity Coal, Eckley Orthodontics, Sam’s Club Beckley, Crab Orchard Walmart, Auntie E’s, and other community contributors.
Major funding is provided by the WVU Extension Service, Volunteer WV, and the Summer Food Service Programthrough the West Virginia Department of Education.
Now in its 31st year, Energy Express remains one of WVU Extension Service’s flagship programs, turning summer into a season of opportunity, enrichment, and connection for children and families across West Virginia.
