5 Daily Habits That Can Transform Your School Year

The back-to-school season often brings a mix of emotions: excitement for a fresh start, relief at the return of routine, and sometimes, the overwhelm of all that needs to be done to prepare. It’s not uncommon for parents to approach the year with optimistic plans and structure, only to watch these good intentions fade as the school year goes on, leaving parents feeling behind and frustrated.

But 2025 can be the year you break the cycle and build lasting, healthy habits. The key is to be deliberate with your time and planning. Even small actions can make a big difference. Whether your child attends a traditional public school or learns from home through an online program, a few simple, effective steps can help you create a phenomenal school year.

Set up and use school phone apps.

Most schools and teachers rely on apps like Remind or Class Dojo to communicate with families. These tools help you stay in the loop about everything from half-days and spirit weeks to book fairs and grade updates. Set up your account early—details will likely be provided at a back-to-school night or in a welcome email, but you can contact the school if it’s unclear.

Once you’re set up, get into the habit of checking the app daily. This will help ensure you don’t miss important updates, starting on the first day of school.

Set alarms to stay on track.

Calendar reminders are effective, but they can be easily missed or dismissed, especially on busy days. Try setting alarms for key times throughout the day when you can take a few moments to read school communications, respond to a teacher’s email, or review homework. This intentional practice can help you stay on track, and repetition will help these actions become part of your daily routine.

Practice healthy lifestyle habits.

Did you know that healthy habits play a big role in your child’s school performance—not to mention their overall well-being? Making sure your child gets good sleep, eats balanced meals, and stays active will set them up for a strong start to the school year and encourage them to embrace a healthy lifestyle. Research even links regular family dinners to better health and stronger academic performance. Plus, it’s a chance to hear more about school and unwind together after a busy day.

Establish a support system.

We’ve all heard the phrase, “It takes a village,” and the school year is no exception. Having a reliable support system can make a big difference in your child’s education. For example, if your child is enrolled in a K12-powered online school like West Virginia Virtual Academy (WVVA)you can join their virtual community where parents and guardians connect, share tips, and plan local field trips. For families with children in traditional schools, ask your child’s teacher if they can share your contact information with other parents. This step can be useful for setting up study groups, play dates, or carpools, and can help you feel connected to your school community.

Your support system also extends to academics. If your child struggles with certain subjects or wants to get ahead, working with a tutor can ease pressure on both of you and help your child reach their goals. Whether you choose a local tutoring center, a private tutor, or a virtual option like K12 Tutoring, you have options that can meet your family’s unique needs.

Encourage positive thinking.

While your child will inevitably have a rough day here and there, practicing positivity can actually support their academic performance, build resilience, and boost their mental and emotional well-being. In fact, a Stanford University study found that having a positive attitude toward math improves the function of the brain’s memory center and can impact a child’s performance in the subject.

Simple habits like listing good things that happened throughout the day or reciting positive affirmations can feel small but are meaningful over time. Plus, maintaining a positive outlook can benefit you, too, giving you the mental boost to power through your busiest days, even when they feel daunting.

These small practices can make a big difference in helping you and your family ease into the school year with more confidence and less stress. When you stay organized, prioritize healthy choices, and maintain a positive attitude, you’re not just keeping yourself on track, you’re also modeling life skills for your child. These habits can create the foundation for a great school year. Start with one and build from there, and you’ll be well on your way to making the 2025-26 school year your family’s best one yet.
