LAKE LURE, NC (LOOTPRESS) — Nearly a year after Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina, the Town of Lake Lure has announced a timeline for the lake’s restoration and reopening.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), working under FEMA’s direction with support from AshBritt Environmental and local contractors, has been leading recovery efforts since October 2024. Crews have worked seven days a week for almost a year to repair the lake basin and shoreline.
The USACE now expects to complete its work by Oct. 31, 2025, a milestone that will allow the next phase of recovery to begin — refilling the lake and preparing for public access.
Target Dates for Refilling and Reopening
-
March 1, 2026: Raise the lake to 978.5 feet, allowing regional and collegiate rowing teams to return.
-
May 1, 2026: Reach full pond level (990.5 feet) and officially reopen Lake Lure to the public.
Mayor Carol Pritchett said the reopening will be “a symbol of resilience, unity, and the incredible power of partnership.”
Ongoing Recovery Projects
In addition to restoring the lake, the Town is working on several related facilities:
-
Morse Park: Reopening with new KaBOOM playground equipment scheduled for installation Oct. 15, 2025.
-
Town Hall & Welcome Center: Awaiting FEMA determinations before moving forward with rebuilding. A temporary Town Hall and Police Department are now operating from The Landings on Buffalo Creek Road.
-
Washburn Marina: Dock rebuilding to proceed in stages.
-
Gas Pump: A new marine fuel pump will be installed near the Gazebo path.
-
Lake Lure Beach: Water lines destroyed by flooding will be replaced, with reopening planned for summer 2026.
Town officials emphasized that the timeline depends on USACE progress, infrastructure work, and weather conditions.
