Arrest Made After Sylva Woman Set on Fire During Domestic Violence Incident

Man Arrested for Public Intoxication After Hotel Disturbance, Later Kicks Officer at Jail

SYLVA, NC (LOOTPRESS) — A Sylva man is behind bars after a shocking domestic violence incident Friday morning left a woman’s clothing burned from her body and caused significant damage inside a Chipper Curve Road home.

Police say the call came in at 7:18 a.m. on November 21, 2025, sending officers rushing to 587 Chipper Curve Road for reports of a domestic dispute. What they discovered, investigators say, was a situation that escalated into a life-threatening act of violence.

A Verbal Fight Turns Violent

According to Sylva Police, Patrick Tyson and a female victim became involved in a heated verbal altercation. During the confrontation, Tyson allegedly grabbed a bottle of isopropyl alcohol and poured it onto the floor—then onto the couch where the woman was sitting.

The victim told officers that Tyson threatened to set her on fire if she didn’t get him a beer. Moments later, he ignited the alcohol, causing the couch — and the victim’s shirt — to erupt in flames.

Damage and Injuries

Despite the terrifying ordeal, the victim escaped without physical injury, though police say her shirt was burned completely off her body. The home, however, wasn’t as fortunate. Reported damage includes:

  • Heavy smoke damage throughout the residence
  • Burned carpet and a charred couch
  • A shattered stove, after Tyson allegedly hurled an item at it during the chaos

The Sylva Fire Department arrived quickly and extinguished the flames before they could spread further.

Charges and Arrest

Tyson was taken into custody at the scene. He now faces a slate of serious charges:

  • Felony Assault With a Deadly Weapon With Intent to Kill
  • Felony First-Degree Arson
  • Misdemeanor Assault on a Female
  • Misdemeanor Injury to Personal Property

He was brought before a magistrate and booked into the Jackson County Jail under a $750,000 secured bond. Tyson’s first court appearance is set for December 1, 2025, in District Court.

Authorities have not released additional details, but the investigation remains ongoing.
