SUMMERS COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Summers County woman has been arrested in connection with the February overdose death of a man at Summers Landing Apartments in Hilldale, according to the Summers County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation began on Feb. 9, 2026, when Sgt. Ward responded to a reported overdose death at the apartment complex.
According to the sheriff’s office, evidence obtained during the investigation indicated that Leadeana Cales failed to render aid to Shawn Richmond while he was suffering from a drug overdose.
On June 1, Sgt. Ward received the autopsy report from the West Virginia State Medical Examiner’s Office. The report determined that Richmond’s cause of death was a drug overdose.
Based on the findings of the investigation and the autopsy report, Sgt. Ward obtained an arrest warrant for Cales. She was arrested later that day and is being held at Southern Regional Jail pending a preliminary hearing.
The sheriff’s office noted that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
