BLUEFIELD, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A well-being check in Bluefield led to the arrest of a man after police say they found a woman injured inside a home and witnessed the suspect yelling and making threats.
According to a police report, Mercer County 911 received a call around 10:40 p.m. on August 8 from a family member requesting a well-being check on a woman.
Investigators determined the woman was staying at a residence on Mineral Street in Bluefield with Phillip Owen, who police say had an active capias warrant through Mercer County Magistrate Court.
When officers arrived at the home, they reported hearing a man yelling from inside. Through an open window, an officer allegedly saw Owen yelling and making threats toward a woman sitting on a couch.
Police entered the home and took Owen into custody on the outstanding warrant.
Officers then spoke with the woman and reported seeing blood coming from her left eye and a finger on her left hand.
The woman told police Owen had become angry and struck her in the face multiple times. She also alleged he hit her hand with a phone, pinned her to the floor, and continued hitting her.
According to the report, the alleged assault caused a previous head injury to reopen and begin bleeding. Officers also noted multiple cuts and scratches on her back.
The woman further told investigators that Owen allegedly choked her until she was unable to breathe. She said she made several attempts to leave the residence during the altercation, but Owen allegedly prevented her from leaving through physical violence and threats.
EMS was called to evaluate the woman at the scene.
Owen was charged with domestic battery, strangulation, and unlawful restraint. He was also arrested on the outstanding capias warrant.
Police transported Owen to the Bluefield Police Department, where he was booked and held pending arraignment.
The charges are allegations, and Owen is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
