BLUEFIELD, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Bluefield State University student has died following an incident at Brush Creek Falls, according to the university.
The incident occurred Saturday, Sept. 5, 2026. Local and state authorities responded to Brush Creek Falls and conducted search and recovery efforts.
University faculty, staff and students have been notified of the death.
“The Bluefield State University community is heartbroken by this loss. Our thoughts are with the student’s family, friends, classmates, and all those affected during this extraordinarily difficult time. University officials are supporting the family and will continue to respect their privacy and wishes,” the university said in a statement.
Bluefield State said it is not releasing the student’s name or additional information at this time out of respect for the family’s privacy.
The university is also providing support and resources to students, faculty and staff affected by the death.
BSU officials said they will continue working with authorities and will release additional information when appropriate and in accordance with the family’s wishes.
