WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – Another round of showers and thunderstorms is expected to develop across West Virginia late Monday afternoon and continue into Monday night, bringing renewed concerns for flash flooding and damaging winds.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, morning showers are expected to taper off by early afternoon before better chances for showers and thunderstorms return later in the day.
Soils across the region are already saturated following recent heavy rainfall. Additional downpours, particularly where rainfall rates reach 1 to 2 inches per hour, could quickly lead to flash flooding.
Stronger thunderstorms could also produce damaging wind gusts. Wet ground could make shallow-rooted trees more susceptible to being toppled by strong winds.
The National Weather Service says heavy rain and localized flash flooding remain concerns Monday, with additional heavy downpours and isolated strong thunderstorms capable of producing more flooding and gusty winds late Monday afternoon and Monday night.
Unsettled weather is expected to continue through Wednesday before cooler air settles into the region. Temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday will turn noticeably cooler, with lingering rain showers possible. Drier and calmer conditions are expected toward the end of the week.
Residents are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts Monday night and to never attempt to drive through flooded roadways.
