BRAMWELL, WV (LOOTPRESS) — An investigation into eBay listings led undercover officers to purchase live newts and turtles allegedly being possessed and sold illegally in Bramwell, according to an investigative account.
Officers began investigating in March after receiving a complaint about listings under the username “thegoldfishcommanderisback.” After locating wildlife advertised through the account, officers obtained a warrant for eBay records.
Investigators said the records showed transactions involving illegally possessed amphibians. The account was registered to James Dunford, while Lucas Dunford was listed as the shipper, with both associated with Bramwell addresses.
In April, undercover officers contacted the seller to ask about local pickup. According to investigators, the person they reached by phone identified himself as Lucas Dunford and said pickup was available.
Officers arranged two undercover purchases in May at a residence on Pocahontas Avenue.
During the first transaction, officers purchased live Eastern newts and an Eastern painted turtle. A second purchase included additional Eastern newts and an Eastern box turtle.
Investigators said they positively identified the animals and confirmed that their possession and/or sale was prohibited.
