CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The West Virginia State Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Elections has advanced a bill that would add an extra qualification required for applicants seeking a vacant seat in the Legislature.
According to the language of Senate Bill 50, introduced by Senator Bill Hamilton (R-Upshur), no person shall be appointed to a vacant seat in either the House or Senate if they have not been a resident of the respective district for at least one year.
This bill would not erase current state law that mandates individuals wishing to serve in the Legislature to be a resident of West Virginia for at least five years.
The bill was advanced out of the subcommittee on a voice vote and will now go to the full Senate Judiciary Committee for consideration.
