ELKINS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Authorities responded to the scene of an accident Tuesday following the attempted passing of a vehicle on Corridor H in Randolph County.
Deputy L.R. Elbon of the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office reports that, on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, a single-vehicle Motor Vehicle Accident was reported on Corridor H near William Proudfoot Road.
Upon the arrival of Deputy Elbon at the scene, a red Chevrolet Silverado could be observed facing oncoming traffic after having struck a mountainside.
The driver – identified as Mike Helmick – revealed to Deputy Elbon that he had been driving towards Elkins and had attempted to pass a vehicle.
Upon passing the vehicle, Helmick’s vehicle began to fishtail, resulting in the truck leaving the roadway and going across the median into oncoming traffic.
Helmick’s vehicle then left the roadway a second time and struck the side of a mountain on a bare rock wall.
Helmick apparently was left with no injuries as a result of the crash, though he was transported to Davis Medical Center to be medically cleared due to previous medical history.
Assistance was provided on the scene by Elkins Fire Department, Coalton Fire Department, and Randolph County EMS.
