Charleston – Leading by 14 points in the fourth quarter, Cameron saw its lead dwindle to three points in the waning minutes but held off Tucker County, securing a 53-46 win and with it the Class A state championship Saturday afternoon in the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.
With the win Cameron secures its second consecutive title, clinching last year’s on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer.
While not as dramatic, Saturday’s contest turned into a thriller as the Dragons went seven minutes without a field goal in the final quarter, allowing the Mountain Lions to make up ground.
But a missed opportunity to tie and a turnover late allowed Cameron to cement the game at the free throw line.
Ashlynn Van Tassell led Cameron and all players with 24 points and 15 rebounds while Maci Neely netted 14.
Kadie Colebank led Tucker with 13 points in the loss.
