South Charleston – Greenbrier West dropped a tough 4-2 decision to Petersburg in game one of the state softball tournament Wednesday afternoon at Little Creek Park.
The Cavaliers took the early lead in the top of the third inning on an RBI-single from Brilee Redden.
Unfortunately for Greenbrier West, the Vikings worked some two-out magic in the bottom of the inning to score all the runs it needed Wednesday.
Following a walk to open the at-bat, West was one out away from any damage when a single from Addison Kitzmiller evened the game at 1-1.
Braylee Corbin gave Petersburg the lead with a triple before scoring the eventual game-winner on a single from Samantha Colaw for a 3-1 advantage.
A single from Maddie Fields in the fourth inning scored Julia Herndon, but that was as close as the Cavaliers could get in opener.
Petersburg added an unearned run in the sixth inning for the final margin.
Greenbrier West will look to stay alive in the double-elimination format when it plays St. Marys at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.
