RICHMOND, VA (LOOTPRESS) – Abigail Spanberger, a former Democratic congresswoman and CIA officer, has been elected Virginia’s next governor, making history as the state’s first female chief executive.
Spanberger defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears after a campaign focused on affordability and local concerns over federal job cuts and the ongoing government shutdown, which affect more than 300,000 federal employees in the state.
She frequently linked Earle-Sears to President Donald Trump, calling the Republican a Trump acolyte, though Trump did not endorse her.
Her victory flips the governor’s office from Republican control under Gov. Glenn Youngkin to Democratic leadership, providing a boost for national Democrats as they respond to a second Trump administration.
The win also strengthens centrist voices in the Democratic Party, who have emphasized their ability to win in swing districts and purple states.
Spanberger, 46, is a mother of three who previously served in law enforcement and the CIA.
She was first elected to Virginia’s 7th Congressional District after defeating former Rep. Dave Brat and served three terms in the House before leaving this year.
