Allergies Acting Up? Experts Warn Pests Could Be to Blame

(LOOTPRESS) – As allergy season peaks across the U.S., affecting over 100 million Americans, experts are warning that pollen isn’t the only culprit. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) are partnering this May to raise awareness about how common household pests like cockroaches, rodents, and dust mites can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms.

“Pests can have a serious impact on your health, especially when it comes to allergies and asthma,” said Dr. Jim Fredericks, NPMA’s Senior Vice President of Public Affairs. “Minimizing exposure to pest allergens is a key step to keeping your home healthy and your family breathing easier.”

Pest-related allergens—such as cockroach droppings, saliva, and shed skin—can cause sneezing, itchy eyes, and even severe asthma attacks, especially in children. While regular cleaning helps, Fredericks noted that only professional pest control can fully eliminate hidden infestations.

NPMA offers these tips to reduce pest-related allergy risks:

  • Seal cracks and holes in walls, floors, and foundations.

  • Store food in airtight containers and clean up crumbs and spills quickly.

  • Dispose of garbage regularly and dust frequently.

  • Repair leaky pipes and address moisture problems.

  • Vacuum with a HEPA filter to remove allergens.

  • Schedule professional pest inspections.
