Berkeley County Schools to implement smartphone-free policy for enhanced learning

BERKELEY COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Beginning Monday, Berkeley County Schools (BCS) will enforce a new policy prohibiting smartphones, smartwatches, and earbuds in classrooms.

The goal of this initiative is to reduce distractions and create an optimal learning environment for both students and teachers.

According to Berkeley County Schools (BCS), the policy applies to all students from Pre-K through 12th grade during the school day on school property. Personal electronic devices may be brought to school but must be turned off and stored away during class time.

In grades PK-5, devices must remain in lockers, backpacks, or designated areas, while students in grades 6-12 can keep them in silent mode but must refrain from using them during instructional periods and class transitions.

The implementation of this policy comes with specific guidelines.

For students in grades PK-5, any use of electronic devices, including calls, texting, or internet browsing, is not allowed during the school day. Students in grades 6-12 face similar restrictions, with additional clarity that devices should not be used during classroom changes.

Certain exceptions will apply, such as emergencies or approved academic use as outlined in lesson plans.

Students with medical or learning needs can also utilize their devices as specified in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or 504 plans.

Consequences for violating this policy will vary depending on the grade level.

For younger students, the first offense will result in a warning, while repeat offenses may lead to confiscation and parental retrieval of the device. Secondary students will face similar penalties, with more severe consequences for habitual violations.

BCS says that changes to the policy are possible following review from the Berkeley County Board of Education.
