VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – Motorists traveling through Bland County on Interstate 77 should prepare for nighttime delays this August, as the Virginia Department of Transportation begins ventilation upgrades in the Big Walker Mountain Tunnel.
The project will require partial tunnel closures from Sunday, August 10, through Thursday, August 29, between mile markers 47 and 49.

During the work, northbound traffic will be diverted into the southbound tunnel from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly, Sunday through Thursday.
Once upgrades in the northbound tube are completed, the pattern will reverse — southbound traffic will be diverted into the northbound tube as work continues.
Traffic in both directions will be escorted by official vehicles, and drivers should expect delays during these overnight hours.
Motorists are advised to remain alert, follow escort vehicles, and obey flaggers at all times while traveling through the tunnel during the upgrades.
