LANSING, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Benjy Simpson, a pioneer in outdoor adventure tourism and co-founder of Bridge Walk in the New River Gorge, passed away on January 26, 2025, at the age of 76.
Simpson played a key role in making the New River Gorge Bridge accessible to visitors in a unique way.
In 2009, he helped launch Bridge Walk, which offers guided tours along the catwalk beneath the bridge.
Since its inception, the attraction has drawn more than 134,000 visitors from all 50 states and 80 countries, providing a breathtaking perspective of one of West Virginia’s most iconic landmarks.
Before founding Bridge Walk, Simpson had a long career in outdoor education and adventure sports.
A graduate of NC State University and Appalachian State University, he dedicated his life to recreation and outdoor programs.
His work included developing an adaptive Outward Bound program in Pennsylvania and running Passages to Adventure, a whitewater rafting and climbing company in West Virginia.
Beyond tourism, Simpson was deeply involved in the local community.
He led youth recreation programs, taught EMT and swiftwater rescue courses, and served as the Bridge Day Rappel and Highline Coordinator for nearly 30 years.
Simpson is survived by his wife of 51 years, Alma Wood Simpson; his son, Benjy Simpson III, and his wife, Margo; and two grandchildren, Wyatt and Emma.
