BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Burlington United Methodist Family Services has announced it is changing its name to Star of Hope Family Services, a ministry of the United Methodist Church.
The organization said the rebranding reflects both its history and its future while honoring more than a century of faith-based service in West Virginia.
Originally established in 1913 as the Star of Hope Children’s Refuge, the organization said returning to the Star of Hope name reconnects it with its roots while better representing the wide range of services it provides today. Although the name is changing, the organization will continue operating as a ministry of the United Methodist Church.
“Our new name reflects both our history and our future,” said Mia Johnson, Chief Executive Officer of Star of Hope Family Services.
“While our name is changing, our mission remains the same—to provide Christ-centered, compassionate, and inclusive care that empowers children, strengthens families, and builds healthier communities throughout West Virginia. Our identity is rooted in more than a century of faithful service, and we are honored to continue that legacy as a ministry of the United Methodist Church.”
According to the organization, the name change comes as it continues expanding services for children, youth, adults, and families across the state. Programs include foster care, adoption, residential treatment, community-based behavioral health services, child advocacy, transitional living, recovery services, parenting support, and community outreach initiatives.
The organization said the new name is also intended to reduce confusion associated with its previous name while creating a more recognizable identity that reflects its statewide mission. Officials said its faith-based mission, values, and affiliation with the United Methodist Church remain unchanged.
To mark the transition, Star of Hope Family Services will host two community rededication celebrations.
The first will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, at the Burlington campus, located at 120 Hope Lane in Burlington. The second celebration will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, at the Beckley campus, located at 4700 Robert C. Byrd Drive.
Community members, partners, supporters, alumni and friends are invited to attend either event, where guests will have the opportunity to tour the facilities, meet staff, learn about the organization’s programs and celebrate the new chapter.
Star of Hope Family Services is a Christ-centered nonprofit organization and ministry of the United Methodist Church serving children, families and communities throughout West Virginia.
