(LOOTPRESS) – Tri-Union Seafoods has initiated a voluntary recall of specific canned tuna products due to a manufacturing defect that poses a risk of contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacterium responsible for botulism—a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. The recall affects products sold under the Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s brands at major retailers, including Trader Joe’s, Costco, Walmart, and H-E-B.
The defect involves the “easy-open” pull tab lids, which may compromise the seal and allow contamination. Consumers are advised not to consume the recalled products, even if they appear normal, and to return them to the place of purchase for a refund or contact Tri-Union Seafoods for a replacement. As of now, no illnesses have been reported.
Botulism is a rare but serious illness that can cause difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and death. Symptoms include trouble breathing, droopy eyes, slurred speech, and weakness. If you have consumed the affected tuna and experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
For a complete list of affected products, including UPC codes and “Best if Used By” dates, consumers can refer to the FDA’s website. Tri-Union Seafoods is providing support and replacement options for affected customers.
