The Lootpress Player of the Week Award, sponsored by Mid-State Ford, Bodyworks and The Law Offices of Brandon Steele, has returned for the second year season.
Below are the candidates for the first week of the prep football season. Voting will close Monday at midnight. The fan vote will be used in the event of a tie.
In order for a player to be eligible or nominated, the stat keeper or coach must report all scores and statistics. Scores can be reported to Tylerjackson@lootpress.com and Rustyudy@lootpress.com.
Below are the candidates for the Week 1 Award.
- Drake Cole, Summers County – In a loaded backfield Cole stood out amongst his peers Friday night. In a 49-14 win over PikeView, Cole carried the ball 16 times for 171 yards and a touchdown while also hauling in a 20 yard touchdown pass.
- Kaiden Vance, Westside – In his debut at QB, Vance made all of the winning plays in a rivalry game. Vance threw two touchdown passes, ran for a third and intercepted two passes on defense in a complete effort, delivering his head coach Justin Cogar his first career win.
- Grant Cochran, Princeton – It was business as usual for Cochran on Friday night as he went 7-of-13 passing, throwing for 119 yards and three touchdowns. For good measure he picked up 35 yards on three carries, scoring a touchdown with his legs in a 53-8 win over Lincoln County.
- Ty Nickell, Greenbrier West – The only thing that could slow Nickell and the West offense down was lightning which forced the Cavaliers to call their game against Buffalo, up 33-0 with five minutes left in the third quarter. Fortunately, that still gave Nickell more than enough time to pick up 237 yards on 23 carries and score three touchdowns in a win.
- Cooper Ridgeway, James Monroe – Ridgeway was a dynamic weapon for the Mavs in their season opener, rushing for 149 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries while catching two passes for 61 yards and a third score.
- Tylai Kimble, Beckley – Kimble proved to be a playmaker Friday when he returned the opening kick against Riverside for a touchdown and followed it up with a 59-yard scoring rumble later in the opening quarter. He finished with 78 yards rushing on nine caries in the win.
- James Green, Oak Hill – Nicholas County’s Kaleb Clark had his 11-game 100-yard rushing streak snapped Friday night in large part thanks to Green. Green racked up an astounding 18 tackles with six solo tackles for a loss and four more assisted tackles for a loss in a 17-7 win over the Grizzlies.
- Judah Price, Independence – Price made it look easy in Thursday’s opener against Liberty. He turned eight carries into 196 yards and four touchdowns in a 60-0 win over rival Liberty. For good measure he converted four two-point conversions attempts, scoring 32 points total to lead all Week 1 players.
The winner of the Player of the Week will receive an invitation to the 2022 Lootpress Fall Sports Banquet to be held in December.
