The Lootpress Player of the Week Award, sponsored by Bodyworks and The Law Offices of Brandon Steele, has returned for softball and baseball season.
Below are the candidates for the third week of the season. Voting will close Monday at midnight. The fan vote will be used in the event of a tie.
In order for a player to be eligible or nominated, the stat keeper or coach must report all scores throughout the week, WIN OR LOSE. Scores can be reported to Tylerjackson@lootpress.com and Rustyudy@lootpress.com. Doing so is simple. All you need to do is take a picture of the official scorebook for both teams, or a screenshot of the gamechanger box and send it to us.
Teams reporting scores this week: Independence, Wyoming East, Greenbrier East, Beckley, Shady Spring and James Monroe.
- Aubrey Smallwood, Beckley – The freshman ace continued to take the area by storm. She pitched back-to-back gems against Wyoming East and Greenbrier East, striking out 16 batters in each game for a total of 32 across 14 innings of work. She also went 4 for 12 at the plate in three games, driving in a run.
- Paige Maynard, Shady Spring – The Penn State signee did it all, pitching five innings and striking out 11 batters in a perfect game against Liberty. The also went 2 for 3 at the plate, driving in three runs.
- Delaney Buckland, Independence – Buckland’s high note of the week came against Nicholas County when she fanned 18 batters over seven innings of work, tossing a shutout. She also went 3 for 3 in the game.
- Olivia Hylton, Wyoming East – Despite going 1-1 in the circle, Hylton didn’t allow a single earned run in 10 innings of work. As a hitter her highlight of the week came in a three-inning matchup with Westside where she went 4 for 4 with two doubles, a triple and four RBI.
- Josi Ervin, Greenbrier East – Ervin helped her team to a 1-1 record this week, allowing just two earned runs in 14 innings. Against Oak Hill she was at her best, allowing just one hit and striking out 16.
- Shannon Phipps, James Monroe – Phipps drove in five runs in wins against Mount View and Greenbrier West, with a hit against Greenbrier West accounting for the final two runs in a 12-11 walk-off win victory.
