CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin has announced the investment of $1.2M to turf the North Charleston multi-use athletic field for baseball, football, and soccer.
It would bring the total number of turfed city-owned athletic fields to 11 and representing a nearly $10M total investment.
“The addition of this multi-use athletic field in North Charleston is a tremendous investment in our Parks and Recreation facilities – expanding opportunities for youth soccer and football and aligning with our vision to provide our kids with increased playing time while also growing sports tourism through new opportunities,” said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin.
Members of Charleston City Council approved the contract with FieldTurfUSA, Inc. to turf a multi-use field during Monday’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting.
The project will be funded through a $250k federal grant and $950k approved in the City’s FY 2024 budget.
“I am thrilled about the addition of this new multi-use field at the North Charleston Community Center – especially for our young people,” said Council Member Pat Jones. “Not only will this field provide a space to play football, baseball and soccer it will also serve as a hub for social interactions and community gatherings – enriching the overall quality of life in our community.”
“This turfing project will be great for our community,” said Council Member Larry Moore. “By adding this new turfed field, we are fostering increased participation among our youth in sports and promoting healthier lifestyles. This project will not only provide a space for organized sports but also encourage spontaneous physical activities – benefiting the overall wellbeing of our community members.”
Work is anticipated to begin in late spring/early summer.
In June 2022, Charleston City Council approved an $8M investment to turf 10 city-owned athletic fields.
