CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Wednesday marked the 18 year anniversary of the passing of Patrolman William “Billy” Overton Jr. of the Charleston Police Department, for which the department released a statement commemorating the date.
Patrolman Overton passed away in the line of duty on July 13, 1994 while responding to a shooting call.
Overton, who had activated the sirens and lights of his patrol vehicle, was cut off by another vehicle.
In an effort to avoid a collision with the vehicle, he swerved into the median, which caused his patrol car to overturn three times.
The shooting call to which Overton was responding ultimately turned out to be unfounded. He was 31 years old.
“Officer Overton proudly served for seven years and was survived by his two sons, two daughters and parents,” read the statement, which was captioned, “Remembering our brother.”
