The Lootpress Player of the Week Award sponsored by Mid-State Ford, Little General, Bodyworks and The Law Offices of Brandon Steele, has returned for the second year.
Below are the candidates for the 10th week of the boys basketball season. Voting will close Thursday, Feb. 23 at 11:59 P.M. The fan vote will be used in the event of a tie. There are also changes to the Player of the Week voting pertaining to the top overall vote getter that you can read about here.
If the the top vote getter has already won a community choice poll, the next leading vote getter who has not won will be named that week’s community choice winner.

- Corey Shumate, Independence – Shumate produced double-doubles in wins over Richwood and Midland Trail, compiling 14 points on 7 of 8 shooting and grabbing 11 boards against Trail.
- Kam’Ron Gore, Bluefield – Gore averaged 15 points per game in a pair of Beaver wins while hitting the game-winning shot against Beckley early in the week.
- David Thomas, PikeView – Thomas averaged 18.5 points per game for the Panthers this week including a high of 20.
- Matt Light, Midland Trail – Trail lost two games this week but Light was strong in his own right, averaging 23 points per game.
- Kris Joyce, Princeton – Princeton split this week with Oak Hill and Greenbrier East but Joyce scored 21 points in each contest, helping the Tigers secure the No. 2 seed in next week’s sectional tournament.
- Malachi Lewis, Oak Hill – Lewis scored 24 points in a win over Princeton.
- John Rose, Greater Beckley – Rose averaged 20.6 points per game this week for the Crusaders
- Josh Burks, James Monroe – Burks scored 14 pions as the Mavericks notched a victory at Greenbrier West.
- Brandon Isaac, Summers County – Isaac poured in 33 points in a win for the Bobcats this past week, averaging 21 points per game.
- Conner Cantley, Liberty – Cantley averaged 15.5 points per game, helping Liberty pick up a regional win in Clear Fork.
- Bryar Bailes, Nicholas County – Bailes poured in 30 points for the Grizzlies in a win early in the week.
- Braden Chapman, Shady Spring – Chapman scored 18 points as the Tiger senior capped his career with a 4-0 record against county foe Beckley with all four wins being the only ones for Shady in the history of the rivalry.
- Sam Boothe, Mercer Christian – Boothe poured in performances of 26 and 23 points this week as the Cavaliers finished third in the WVCAT tournament.
