After two years, a new set of champions will be crowned in the Class AA portion of the State Track and Field Championships on Friday at Laidley Field in Charleston.
There’s no absence of local flavor.
Shady Spring will have 14 different athletes competing in individual events, leading the area.
But the Tigers aren’t necessarily the favorites all around.
Westside’s Daniel Reed has the brightest outlook of any area athlete, earning the top seed in the long jump and and high jump events. Bluefield’s Jacorian Green comes to Charleston with the hope of securing titles in the 100 and 200-meter dashes as he’s the No. 2 seed in both events.
Rounding out the list of top seeds in the area are the Nicholas County duo of Natalie Barr, who will be the No. 2 seed in the 800-meter run, and Taylor Winebrenner – the No. 2 seed in shot put and discus.
As a whole, the area is well-represented on the girls side.
Barr, Layla Stover (Wyoming East), Nevaeh Canterbury (Shady), Ryen Keffer (Shady) and Emonia Hodge (Bluefield) will all be competing in the 100-meter dash on Friday – the most loaded field locally. The 200-meter dash will feature Emily Stevens (Shady), Taylor Mackenzie (Independence) and Canterbury. The 800-meter run will be led by Barr as the No. 2 seed with Erin O’Sullivan (PikeView) and Brooke Berneberg (Shady Spring) joining her. Barr and O’Sullivan will compete in the 1600-meter run wish Jessica York representing Shady. O’Sullivan and York will be matched up again in the 3200, joined by Nicholas County’s Tyree Soren.
The 100-meter hurdles will feature three Raleigh County foes in Lillian Hatfield (Shady) and Chloe and Lilli Honaker (Independence). Chloe Honaker and Hatfield will matchup again in the 300-meter hurdles, joined by PikeView’s Katie Begley.
In the high jump Sydney Cochran (Westside), Lexi Cozort (Liberty), Ashleigh Gabbert (Shady) and Mary Berg (Nicholas County) will compete with Canterbury, O’Sullivan and Hatfield battling in the long jump. Rounding out the field events on the girls side are shotput and discus.
Winebrenner is the No. 2 seed in both events. In shot put she’s joined by Shady’s Brooklyn Lipford and Bluefield’s Beyonka Lee. In Discus she’ll compete against Independence’s Olivia Green.
In the team competitions Shady will compete in the 4×100, 200 and 800-meter relays and the 4×102.5-meter shuttle hurdles. Wyoming East will compete in the 100 and 200-meter relays. Independence will be in the 102.5-meter shuttle hurdles and 100-meter relay while PikeView will compete in the 200, 800 and 102.5.
On the boys side Bluefield dominates the 100 and 200-meter dashes locally. Jacorian Green is the No. 2 seed in both events, joined by classmate Amir Hairston in both events and another Beaver in Gaige Sisk in the 200. Liberty’s Logan Dodrill joins Hairston and Green as the only other athlete to compete in the 100-meter dash
In the 800-meter run PikeView’s Logan Keaton and Shady’s Colton Meadows will search for titles while Ethan Board (Nicholas County), Jacob Dowdy (Shady) and Griffin Irvin (Nicholas County) will compete in the 1600-meter runs.
The 110-meter hurdles features the Nicholas County duo of Jordan Donaldson and Jonny Sweeney, joined by Shady’s Hayden Johnson. Johnson will compete again in the 300-meter hurdles alongside teammate Jacob Showalter. In the field events Daniel Reed leads the pack in the high jump and long jump events. Joining him in the high jump is Hunter Davis (Shady), Dawson Brown (Nicholas County) and Nick Holbert (PikeView). In the long jump Shady’s Christian Riffe is the only local athlete competing against Reed.
In shot put and discus Nicholas County will be represented by Roman Milam with Indy’s Nick Worix also competing in the shot put competition. Liberty’s David Adkins will round out the field events, competing in the discus throw.
On the team side Shady will compete in the 100-, 200-, 400- and 800-meter relays in addition to the 110-meter shuttle hurdles. Bluefield will be featured in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 while PikeView will be in the 100-, 200-, 800-relays and 110hurdles. Nicholas County rounds the team competitions out with a squad in the 400-meter relays and 110 shuttle hurdles.
The track and field events, excluding the 400-meter and 3200-meter individual competitions, will begin on Friday at 11 a.m. at Laidley Field in Charleston.
The 400 and 3200 finished up Thursday night after rain delays.
On the boys side Ethan Board placed fourth while Isaiah Valentine finished sixth.
On the girls side PikeView’s Erin O’Sullivan finished third in the 3200 while Natalie Barr from Nicholas finished sixth in the 400.
