CLIFTON FORGE, VA (LOOTPRESS) – In a departure from tradition, the C&O Historical Society proudly presents the 2024 edition of its annual calendar, titled “Twilight in the Wilderness.”
This marks a significant milestone as, for the first time in many years, the calendar features vivid color imagery, offering a glimpse into the final years of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C&O) in the New River Gorge.
Now in its third year of publication, the popular calendar, previously known as “Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Through the New River Gorge,” shifts its focus to the period of 1970-1987.
During these years, photographers captured the C&O retaining much of its mid-century appearance, immortalizing the iconic railroad before its transformation into a modern operation.
The calendar’s theme, “Twilight in the Wilderness,” aptly captures the historic intersection at the descent of the Chesapeake & Ohio’s last end, allowing readers to witness the grandeur of the final years of this renowned railway.
In this era, the C&O Railway maintained the essence of an older world, even as it embarked on its journey towards becoming a modern operation.
A notable feature of this year’s calendar is the introduction of color images, a departure from the black and white photographs that have characterized previous editions.
The 28-page calendar boasts 80-lb Gloss for each month, complemented by a 100-lb Gloss cover.
It is saddle-stitched with one hole drilled for convenient hanging, providing both durability and functionality.
In drawing parallels to historical events, the introduction of the calendar references historian Barbara W. Tuchman’s poignant description of the funeral of Edward VII of England in “The Guns of August.”
Tuchman’s words, describing the sunset of the old world, echo the sentiment of the C&O Railway’s final years captured in this calendar.
Just as Tuchman marked the end of an era for the British Empire, the calendar pays homage to the twilight years of the Chesapeake & Ohio, a corporate entity that left an indelible mark on history since its inception in 1868.
