COAL CITY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Coal City Elementary School will reopen Tuesday, Sept. 1, following a delayed start to the school year, Raleigh County Schools Superintendent Dr. Serena Starcher announced Monday.
The school has remained closed since the beginning of the 2026-27 school year as officials worked to prepare the building for students.
Starcher said all students will have their first day of school Tuesday, with adjustments being made to the schedule for pre-K students.
Pre-K students who were originally scheduled to attend Tuesday, Sept. 1, will attend as planned. Those who were scheduled to attend Monday, Aug. 31, will instead attend Wednesday, Sept. 2.
All pre-K students will begin attending together Thursday, Sept. 3.
“We hope all students have a wonderful 1st day of school tomorrow. Again, we appreciate your patience during this time,” Starcher said.
The reopening follows work at the school involving an environmental specialist and professional cleaning service. Starcher previously said those teams had been on site providing input and support as the district prepared to reopen the building.
