ATHENS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Concord University Esports team partook in the three-day HUE Invitational 2024 tournament where team members were named grand champions and awarded a cash prize.
The event featured twelve collegiate teams and was hosted by Harrisburg University on September 20th – September 22nd.
Participating teams competed against one another in pool play for the first two days before the top four teams with the highest records moved to Sunday’s championship rounds. The prevailing teams for the HUE Invitational 2024 tournament were Maryville University, West Virginia University, Illinois State University, and Concord University.
The Grand Finals rounds saw Concord take the win over West Virginia University 4 and 0 in a best-of-seven series to claim victory, as well as a $2,500 cash prize.
Concord University Esports Program Director, Austin Clay expressed pride in the victory and the efforts of the team, stating, “I am incredibly proud of the Rocket League team that Jonathan built, securing 1st place against WVU, the No. 2 team overall, last year. Winning that match meant so much to our program and the university.”
Clay would also commend the administrative team at Concord University for their ongoing support for the program.
“Along with way, we also faced PSU, Ole Miss, Michigan State, and seven other teams to claim victory at the HUE Invitational,” he said. “A big thanks to Harrisburg University for hosting and inviting us to such a prestigious event. Finally, I want to express my gratitude to the administration at Concord for their unwavering support of Esports at this high level.”
Concord University, in 2019, would become the very first public university in the State of West Virginia to develop its own Esports program. Since that time, Concord Esports has claimed ten national championships – one for Rocket League and nine for Call of Duty.
Additionally, Concord University has achieved recognition for multiple accomplishments including becoming finalists for the 2024 CECC Program Impact Award, 2024CECC Program of the Year, and the 2024 ECAC Commissioners Cup recipients.
