Concord University President announces retirement

Cameron B. Gunnoe by Cameron B. Gunnoe
Tuesday, July 2, 2024 2:20 pm

ATHENS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Concord University President, Dr. Kendra S. Boggess has announced plans to retire next year.

Having taken on the role of university president in the spring of 2014, Dr. Boggess served as Concord’s very first female president. She has since been a guiding force for the university in the face an array of challenges including funding cuts, the COVID-19 pandemic, and more.

Dr. Boggess has been actively involved in several impactful projects during her time as university president, including numerous milestones having been reached by the CU Foundation, comprehensive renovation to student dormitory structures, and enhancement of living conditions for students through implementation of modern amenities.

Concord University has also seen greater success as a result of Boggess efforts in the addition of a student health center on campus, various infrastructure improvements, and upgrades to athletic facilities in use by the school, including the renovation of the Concord track.

Under Boggess’ administration, new programs were introduced as part of the university’s curriculum, including Physician Assistant Studies, Nursing, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, Substance Use Studies, and Masters of Business Administration, along with a number of program minors developed to enhance graduate studies.

The advocacy of Dr. Boggess brought about the establishment of the very first Varsity Esports Team in West Virginia, as well as a major in Esports. Funding was increased substantially during Boggess’ time with the university for the support of Faculty and Student research, as well as student support services and academic programing.

“It is with a mixture of gratitude, pride, and a touch of sadness that I plan to leave The Campus Beautiful and embark on my future retirement plans,” said Dr. Boggess. “I have been consistently buoyed by an extraordinary community through every challenge. It has truly been the honor of my lifetime to represent and help build our
community at Concord University.”

A search committee has been tasked with securing a suitable successor to the role of university president, and will be led by committee chair, Dr. Brad Lane.

“With Dr. Boggess’s announcement, it marks the end of a significant era of leadership and
dedication. Her tenure has been characterized by a commitment to academic excellence, student
success, shared governance, and community engagement,” declared Lane. “The search committee will diligently seek a leader who can uphold Concord University’s values, traditions, and also bring innovative ideas to
guide the institution into the future.”

Dr. Boggess retirement at Concord University President will go into effect in August of 2025, marking 41 total years of service to the university for the dedicated leader.
