CALIFORNIA (LOOTPRESS) – Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell announced Sunday he is suspending his campaign for governor following intense pressure from allies and a wave of sexual misconduct allegations.
In a statement posted online, Swalwell apologized for past “mistakes in judgment” but denied the allegations, calling them false and pledging to fight them outside the campaign.
The decision comes after a former staffer accused Swalwell of engaging in inappropriate relationships during her employment and alleged he sexually assaulted her while she was unable to consent. While the claims have not been independently verified, reporting indicated supporting evidence such as text messages and medical records.
Additional allegations soon followed, with multiple women coming forward accusing the congressman of misconduct, including claims of unsolicited explicit messages. Swalwell has repeatedly denied all accusations.
The controversy quickly sparked backlash from both political allies and opponents. Several Democratic lawmakers — including campaign co-chairs — publicly urged him to step aside, while prominent figures called for investigations into the claims.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the allegations must be taken seriously and addressed with transparency, adding that such matters are best handled outside of an active campaign.
Dozens of former staffers also signed a public letter calling on Swalwell to end his campaign and resign from Congress, while prosecutors in New York confirmed an investigation into the allegations is underway.
Despite being a leading contender in the upcoming gubernatorial primary, Swalwell’s campaign unraveled within days of the allegations surfacing. The crowded race remains competitive as candidates vie for the top two spots that will advance to the general election.
Swalwell, who has served in Congress since 2013 and was a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, now faces growing calls to step down from office as investigations continue.
