ELKINS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – An ongoing investigation seeks to identify the owner of an abandoned diesel truck discovered in Randolph County late last month.
According to reports from Sheriff Rob Elbon of the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department, a call for service was received on Monday, October 31, 2022 pertaining to an abandoned vehicle left on a piece of private property off US Rt 33 East in the Isner Creek area.
Upon arriving on the scene, Sheriff Elbon discovered a white, 4-door Chevrolet Duramax 2500 pickup which had been left in a peculiar area of the property owner’s land.
The property owner assured that they had no idea to whom the truck belonged, and that no permission had been given for the vehicle to have been discarded on the property.
The truck’s Pennsylvania license plates were run and returned a result of a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado. Furthermore, it was revealed that the plates had been registered for a truck with a gasoline engine, despite the vehicle on the property exhibiting the plates clearly being a Duramax Diesel.
Deputies L.R. Elbon and J.L. Wolfe also made their way to the scene to offer assistance.
Although the truck’s VIN plate having been mostly obscured, the last 9 digits were clearly visible, and were an obvious mismatch for the VIN from the license plate registration.
It was not possible to see inside the vehicle, as the windows and even the windshield had been blacked out with dark tint to the extent that the inside was entirely obscured.
A complete VIN number for the vehicle was obtained upon further investigation, and upon being run through 911 services returned stolen out of New Briton Township in the State of Pennsylvania.
Any available evidence around the truck was collected, and the vehicle was towed off to be impounded for processing.
Authorities are in the process of obtaining a search warrant for inspection of the inside of the vehicle, and for the collection of any items of evidentiary value from within.
This investigation remains ongoing, and any individuals with information pertinent to the investigation, the vehicle, or the owner are encouraged to contact Sheriff Elbon or a deputy from the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department through 911.
