(LOOTPRESS) – Health professionals are advising people to limit the time spent sitting on the toilet, cautioning that extended bathroom breaks may lead to health issues. According to doctors, sitting on the toilet for more than 10 minutes can increase pressure on rectal veins, potentially contributing to conditions such as hemorrhoids and other gastrointestinal problems.
Dr. Jennifer Walker, a gastroenterologist, explains that prolonged sitting in a hunched-over position, common for many during bathroom time, can strain the lower body. “The toilet posture is different from how we typically sit. When you’re sitting for too long, the downward pressure on veins in the rectal area increases, raising the risk of hemorrhoid formation,” she says.
Medical experts recommend limiting bathroom time to 10 minutes or less. “If you don’t feel the need to go within a few minutes, it’s better to stand up and move around rather than forcing it,” says Dr. Walker.
Many people are unaware that habits like bringing a phone or book to the bathroom can lead to unintended health consequences. Doctors urge people to focus on the task at hand to avoid distraction and reduce sitting time.
Simple lifestyle changes, such as regular physical activity, high-fiber foods, and staying hydrated, are suggested to help reduce bathroom time naturally.
Doctors continue to stress that awareness and adjustments to daily routines can help prevent avoidable health issues.
