HUNTINGTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Marshall University has announced that Dorothy “Dot” Hicks will serve as grand marshal for the university’s 2024 Homecoming, scheduled from Sept. 30 to Oct. 5.
Hicks, a trailblazing figure in women’s sports at Marshall, will lead the Homecoming parade on Friday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m. down Fourth Avenue in Huntington.
“We are proud to recognize Dot Hicks — a trailblazer, leader and legend — as this year’s grand marshal,” said Matt James, vice president of alumni relations. “Her commitment and contributions to our university have made a significant impact, and we are honored to celebrate her service throughout Homecoming week.”
A former administrator, coach, and professor, Hicks was instrumental in founding Marshall’s women’s intercollegiate athletic programs.
She has been honored with several scholarships in her name and was inducted into the Marshall Athletics Hall of Fame in 1990.
In 2008, the university’s softball stadium, Dot Hicks Field, was named in her honor.
“Being selected as grand marshal is one of the best things that’s ever happened to me,” Hicks said. “It’s wonderful to be recognized, but I just wanted to make sure the athletes had what they needed.”
In addition to leading the parade, Hicks will participate in several other Homecoming events, culminating in the football game against Appalachian State University on Saturday, Oct. 5.
Other highlights of Homecoming week include the Unity Walk, the Alumni Association’s 25th and 50th Class Reunions, and the Marshall University Black Alumni Hall of Fame induction.
