MULLENS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A new educational fishing pond is now open to the public at Twin Falls Resort State Park in Wyoming County, thanks to a grant and support from the West Virginia State Parks Foundation.
Construction on the project began in 2024 after the park received a $20,000 grant from the Hearts of STIHL Foundation.
With additional funding and billing assistance from the West Virginia State Parks Foundation, the pond was built by the park’s own maintenance staff.
“We felt this was a great way to enhance our educational nature programming by creating a pond ecosystem for fish, insects, animals, and reptiles,” said Aaron England, Assistant Park Superintendent. “Additionally, this pond will help with drainage and flood control during heavy rains.”
The new pond will serve as a central feature for nature programs held weekly at Twin Falls by the Park Naturalist. It offers a hands-on learning environment for studying aquatic and wetland ecosystems.
“I’d like to invite everyone to Twin Falls to attend our nature programs,” England said. “It’s a great way to learn and just spend time in the outdoors.”
Future plans for the area include construction of an arched bridge and viewing deck over the pond, along with interpretive signs to enhance visitor understanding of the ecosystem. The pond will be stocked with bass and bluegill.
The Hearts of STIHL Foundation’s mission is “to help those people and programs that are caring for the national treasures that are our America’s State Parks and preserve them for the enjoyment of all Americans, current and future.”
The West Virginia State Parks Foundation Inc., an independent nonprofit organization, works to “preserve, protect, and enhance West Virginia State Parks by providing leadership in communication, funding, and advocacy in partnership with individual Park Foundations.”
Twin Falls Resort State Park is set on a high, wooded ridge in the rugged mountains of southern West Virginia.
It offers over 25 miles of hiking and biking trails, an 18-hole golf course, a splash park, nature programming, and a variety of accommodations including a lodge, cabins, and campgrounds.
