CHARLOTTE, NC (LOOTPRESS) – Less than 5% of voters turned out for the City of Charlotte Primary.
The City of Charlotte held its primary elections on Tuesday, September 12, 2023. There were 482,577 eligible voters, but only 23,676 voters turned out. Part of the reason for a lower turnout was this was a Democrat primary.
Current Mayor Vi Lyles won her primary with 85% of the vote.
Six candidates were vying for four City of Charlotte Council at Large seats. Dimple Ajmera was at the top of the list with a 22% vote, followed by LaWana Slack-Mayfield, James (Smuggie) Mitchell, Jr., and Victoria Watlington. Charlene Henderson El and Ben Copeland lost.
Malcolm Graham won the City of Charlotte Council District 2 seat.
Tiawana Deling Brown won the City of Charlotte Council District 3 seat.
Renee Perkins Johnson won the City of Charlotte Council District 4 seat.
Marjorie Molina won the City of Charlotte Council District 5 seat.
It should be noted that all incumbents and current city council members easily won their re-election.
In District 1, Dan Anderson had no challengers.
There were no contested races in District 6. Republican incumbent Tariq Bokhari will face Democratic Challenger Stephania Hand in the General Election.
Republican Ed Driggs in District 7 had no challengers.
