FAIRMONT, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Fairmont State University has announced that a $5,000 grant has been issued to the institution through the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission for the organization of a week-long First-Generation College Student celebration featuring activities and events celebrating first-generation students

First-generation students are those whose parents did not complete a four-year college degree, and these students make up over forty percent of Fairmont State University students.

“The First-Generation Celebration at Fairmont State will highlight the resilience and achievements of our first-generation Falcons, fostering a culture of support and pride the strengthens our entire campus community,” said Associate Director of Orientation, Justin Rader. “Our goal is to honor the perseverance of our first-generation Falcons, enhance their sense of belonging, and inspire the entire campus to support and uplift them.”

The grant funding will allow for Fairmont State to host events which include motivational speeches from the students being celebrated, panel discussions, interactive workshops, presentations and forums, and other activities. Activities featured will facilitate connections and support from peers with the university’s first-generation student community. Group activities, social events, and mentorship programs will also be offered as part of the celebration.

“I was the first person in my family to attend college, so I understand how challenging the transition from high school can be. At Fairmont State, we are dedicated to being a Great Place to Learn,” says Fairmont State University President Mike Davis. “That means supporting our first-generation students in every step of their journey, ensuring they have the tools and resources necessary to succeed and transform their futures.”

The grant was received by the university as the result of a collaborative effort involving Manager of Student Support/Outreach Enrollment Services, Keith Gibson, and Associate Director of Orientation, Justin Rader.

The First-Generation Student celebration event will get underway later this year, beginning on November 4, 2024, and continuing through November 8, 2024.
