FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Fayette County Health Department is encouraging residents affected by recent flooding to check their vaccination status, particularly those who have been exposed to flood water or are assisting with cleanup efforts.
Health officials said flood cleanup can increase the risk of cuts, puncture wounds and other injuries that could lead to tetanus exposure. People who are due for a tetanus-containing vaccine may need a Tdap or Td booster.
The department is also reminding residents about the Hepatitis A vaccine, which may be recommended for people at increased risk when flooding affects sanitation or results in exposure to contaminated water or sewage.
Anyone who has been exposed to flood water or is participating in cleanup efforts and is unsure of their vaccination status is encouraged to contact the Fayette County Health Department.
Health department staff can review vaccination histories and help determine whether a Tdap, Td or Hepatitis A vaccine is recommended.
Officials also urged residents to wear protective clothing and gloves while cleaning up flood-damaged areas and to avoid contact with flood water whenever possible.
