FAYETTEVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – For the first time in over 100 years, registered Republicans outnumber Democrats in Fayette County.
According to Fayette County voter registration totals, Republicans took over as the leading party on Tuesday, July 23.
Republicans were tied with Democrats as of Monday evening.
As of Tuesday, there are currently 9,188 registered Republicans and 9,185 registered Democrats.
7,533 voters are currently registered as a different party or no affiliation.
Fayette County has historically been a stronghold for Democrats on the local and state level for decades.
It wasn’t until recent years Republicans took control of offices in the county such as county commission, assessor, circuit clerk, and state delegate and senate seats.
Delegate Elliott Pritt who represents Fayette County in the House says the policies from national Democrats have turned local voters away from the party:
“People are tired of the radical policies coming from Democrats in DC that do not align with what our people here in Fayette County hold dear. We hold to the truths of hard work, patriotism, and love of country and state.
We are fiercely loyal to our families, our faith, and our autonomy. Freedom matters. And I think very much like my own eyes were opened and I returned to my own family roots, the eyes of many people in Fayette County have opened to what matters most too.
You cannot push for policies that the very large majority of our people disagree with and then expect the people to vote for your candidates. And that is exactly what the Democratic party has done.
They have permanently alienated the people of Southern West Virginia because of their policies. I look for there to be a Republican majority in our area for the rest of my lifetime.”
Delegate Eric Brooks who also represents a part of Fayette County in the House says this is something happening nationwide, not just here at home:
“I think this change is just reflective of what’s happening all across the nation.
The policies being pushed by the current Democrat Party do not line up with the fundamental beliefs of our people.
The energy policies in particular are troublesome for the Democrat Party. We are coal people and the Democrat Party is now the anti Coal party.
Additionally, the majority of our people are, and have always been, socially conservative. The woke policies pushed by the Democrats just no longer line up with the beliefs of the majority of our citizens.
You are seeing this played out in our communities by so many people now fleeing the Democrat Party. Thus, Fayette County is now a Republican majority County.
As Democrats seemingly continue to double down on these unpopular policies, I believe you will continue to see county after county flipping Republican.”
