WASHINGTON, D.C. (LOOTPRESS) — The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program released its Officers Killed and Assaulted in the Line of Duty, 2024 Special Report on Monday, May 12, 2025, offering a comprehensive look at threats faced by law enforcement officers across the country last year.
According to the report, 64 officers were feloniously killed in 2024, a figure that remains in line with the previous two years. However, the rate of assaults on officers has climbed significantly, reaching the highest level in a decade. In total, agencies reported 85,730 assaults on officers in 2024 — a rate of 13.5 assaults per 100 officers.
Firearms remained the most commonly used weapon in fatal attacks on law enforcement, and the South region saw the highest number of officer deaths. That area experienced a 45% spike in fatal incidents in 2024 compared to the previous year, rising from 20 to 29 deaths.
Of the 61 individuals reported as offenders in officer felonious killings, 95.9% were male, 57.9% were white, and over half had prior criminal records.
Although assaults involving firearms dipped slightly from a peak of approximately 500 incidents in 2023 to 457 in 2024, the overall trend of violence against law enforcement continues to draw concern.
The FBI also released its 2024 Law Enforcement Employee Counts data, which tracks the number of full-time sworn officers and civilian staff in departments nationwide. These figures help agencies assess staffing levels and plan for future enforcement and public safety needs.
