WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A groundbreaking initiative is set to improve accessibility in the hospitality industry by providing a real-world testing ground for assistive technologies.
The Accessibility Lab (“The Lab”), a collaboration between The Schoolhouse Hotel, TravelAbility, and Samaritan Partners, will allow startups to refine innovations in an operational hotel, ensuring that accessibility solutions are both effective and practical.
The Schoolhouse Hotel in White Sulphur Springs, the world’s first fully accessible boutique hotel and a member of Wyndham Hotels’ Trademark portfolio, will serve as the physical testing ground for The Lab.
Housed in a repurposed 1912 high school in White Sulphur Springs, the hotel features 30 adaptive guest rooms and inclusive event spaces designed for accessibility.
With an upcoming expansion that includes 85 additional rooms, a spa, a micro-distillery, and retail space, The Lab will provide even more opportunities for real-world testing.
Startups working on assistive technologies—such as voice-activated room controls and smart navigation aids—will be able to test their products in an operational hospitality setting.
This hands-on approach ensures that real travelers validate each solution before it reaches the market.
Many accessibility innovations in hospitality are developed without real-world testing, often resulting in solutions that do not fully meet travelers’ needs.
The Accessibility Lab seeks to change that by uniting industry leaders who are committed to inclusive innovation.
TravelAbility, a leader in accessible tourism, connects The Lab to real traveler needs through its extensive hospitality network.
The organization also supplies a steady stream of innovative ideas through its annual InnovateAble event, which showcases more than 40 accessibility-focused startups.
Samaritan Partners, a social impact venture fund, supports early-stage companies focused on disability services.
With a particular interest in assistive travel technologies, the fund provides mentorship, networking, and investment opportunities to startups looking to shape the future of accessible hospitality.
The Lab aims to move accessibility solutions from theory to practice by providing a space where innovations can be tested, refined, and widely adopted.
The initiative benefits multiple stakeholders, including entrepreneurs, hospitality leaders, and impact investors.
For entrepreneurs and startups, The Lab offers real-time testing, mentorship, market validation, and industry visibility.
For hospitality leaders, it provides early access to breakthrough accessibility innovations and direct input into shaping assistive technologies.
For impact investors, it offers exclusive access to market-tested, de-risked investment opportunities and the chance to support measurable change in the industry.
“At The Schoolhouse Hotel, accessibility isn’t an afterthought—it’s at the heart of everything we do,” said Ron Kuzon, owner of The Schoolhouse Hotel.
“By serving as the living lab for this initiative, we’re providing startups with an authentic hospitality environment to refine their innovations, ensuring that future travelers with disabilities experience true inclusivity and comfort. This initiative ensures that travelers with disabilities are part of the innovation process, shaping solutions that truly meet their needs.”
