CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Most West Virginians will see their first flakes of the season early next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, rain showers will mix with and change to snow showers Sunday evening, beginning in the higher elevations and spreading into the lowlands before sunrise Monday morning.
Forecasters expect light accumulations across the lowlands and coalfields, with most areas seeing less than an inch of snow.
Much of the accumulation is expected to occur on grassy and elevated surfaces such as bridges due to warm ground temperatures.
The central and northern West Virginia mountains stand a better chance of seeing measurable snow, with a couple of inches possible in some spots. Colder temperatures in those areas could allow snow to accumulate on roadways.
The National Weather Service cautions drivers to plan extra time for the Monday morning commute, noting that the first snow of the season often brings more hazardous travel conditions as drivers readjust to winter weather.
