WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – Republican Delegate Bill Flanigan is projected to defeat incumbent Justice Tom Ewing in Tuesday’s West Virginia Primary Election, according to unofficial election returns.
The race for Division 2 on the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia is a nonpartisan contest and will decide who serves on the state’s highest court because there will be no general election matchup in November.
Flanigan built a strong lead through heavy support in counties across northern West Virginia, including the Northern Panhandle and north-central regions of the state, where early returns showed him outperforming Ewing by significant margins.
Ewing, who was appointed to the court in 2025 by Gov. Patrick Morrisey after serving as a Fayette County circuit judge, sought to retain the seat but struggled to match Flanigan’s support outside southern West Virginia.
Flanigan currently serves in the West Virginia House of Delegates representing the 4th District and previously practiced law in the Northern Panhandle.
Unofficial election results are expected to be canvassed in the coming days.
