WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for portions of west-central Greenbrier County and northeastern Summers County as heavy rain from thunderstorms continues to produce flooding across the area.
The warning remains in effect until 2 a.m. Monday.
As of 7:58 p.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service said public reports indicated thunderstorms had dropped between 1.5 and 2 inches of rain, with an additional 0.5 to 1.5 inches possible. Forecasters said flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
Forecasters warn that flash flooding may impact small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, and other low-lying and poor drainage locations.
Communities included in the warning area include Rainelle, Rupert, Quinwood, Sandstone, Meadow Bluff, Lawn, and Elton.
Streams and waterways that could be affected include Kitchen Creek, Lick Creek, Beaver Creek, Laurel Creek, Boggs Creek, Eagle Branch, Burdette Creek, Little Clear Creek, Meadow River, Meadow Creek, Fisher Creek, Little Creek, and Big Clear Creek.
Residents in the warned area are urged to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to move to higher ground if flooding develops.
