CUNARD, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Another round of heavy rain brought flash flooding to parts of southern West Virginia Sunday morning, continuing a pattern of high-water events that have repeatedly affected the region this summer.
Storms moved through the area early Sunday, sending creeks and streams out of their banks as many residents were beginning their day and preparing to head to church or work.
Fayette County was among the hardest-hit areas, with flash flood warnings issued as storms dumped several inches of rain across portions of the county.
High water caused problems in communities across the county, including Gauley Mountain, Mount Hope, Minden, Ansted, Victor, Gatewood and Cunard.
Some of the most significant damage was reported along Cunard Road, where rushing water from a nearby creek washed out two bridges providing access to homes. The damage left residents without a way to reach the properties by vehicle.
A couple who has lived along the creek for more than 50 years declined an on-camera interview but told LOOTPRESS the flooding was among the worst they have witnessed during their time living there.
The flooding comes after southern West Virginia has experienced multiple rounds of heavy rain and high water throughout the summer.
Additional rainfall is possible Sunday night, with Flood Watches remaining in effect for parts of the region through Monday.
