SALISBURY, NC (LOOTPRESS) – Food Lion is kicking off Hunger Action Month efforts by partnering with dozens of colleges and university, including Bluefield State University, to tackle hunger on college campuses.
The Sack to Give Back program will kick off in September and will see Food Lion continuing efforts which have brought over three million meals to those in need since 2019. For every quarterback sack made by participating institutions, 1,000 meals will be donated to provide hunger relief. Each participating school can earn up to 30,000 donated meals.
A recent report from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation notes that food insecurity is experienced by college students at a higher rate than members of the general population. The estimates in these reports place college students between 33% and 51% food insecurity by comparison to 10% of the general population.
“At Food Lion, we believe no one should have to choose between dinner and rent or gas and groceries,” said Food Lion Feeds Manager, Kevin Durkee. “That’s why we’re passionate about helping end hunger in our communities. Through this annual effort, we help nourish college students who experience hunger, increasing access to nutritious food and setting students up for success.”
