KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A former Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputy and past Jackson County sheriff’s candidate is facing multiple charges following a recent traffic stop in Kanawha County, according to a criminal complaint.
Christopher Noel Braley, 57, of Given, West Virginia, was charged with impersonation of a law enforcement officer, first-offense driving under the influence, and simple possession of marijuana.
According to the complaint, the incident occurred on April 21, 2026, when a West Virginia State Police trooper observed a white GMC Sierra traveling southbound on U.S. Route 119 near Alum Creek.
The vehicle was reportedly weaving within its lane multiple times, prompting a traffic stop.
During the stop, the trooper made contact with the driver, identified as Braley, who allegedly presented a badge and identification indicating he was affiliated with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department.
Investigators later determined the identification appeared to be a false printed ID and not an official or current credential.
The trooper reported smelling a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and noted that Braley had slurred speech.
According to the complaint, Braley initially claimed he was an active sergeant with the sheriff’s department but later recanted, stating he was retired.
Authorities said Braley admitted to having marijuana inside the vehicle and handed over a plastic bag containing marijuana buds. Rolling papers were also reportedly found during a pat-down search.
Field sobriety tests were conducted, during which Braley showed signs of impairment, including difficulty with eye movement tests. He was unable to complete a one-leg stand test, citing a medical condition.
Braley was taken into custody and transported to the West Virginia State Police South Charleston Detachment for processing. While in custody, officers reported that he appeared drowsy and intermittently agitated.
He was later taken to Thomas Memorial Hospital, where a blood sample was collected for further testing.
Court documents indicate a magistrate found probable cause for the charges, and Braley was arrested without a warrant.
Braley previously faced multiple charges in 2020, including battery on an officer, impersonating an officer, DUI, and leaving the scene of an accident.
The investigation remains ongoing.
